Moors have added vast experience and commanding presence to their squad after agreeing a deal to sign goalkeeper, Matt Urwin.
The Blackpool-born ‘keeper has been playing his trade in the National League North since 2017, having made over 354 appearances for Chorley in that time.
Uwrin started his career at Blackburn Rovers, where he spent time on loan at Taunton and Stalybridge Celtic between 2012 and 2014.
The shot-stopper made the move to Bradford city in the summer of 2014, initially signing non-contract terms with the Bantams. Urwin was on the bench for their famous 2-4 FA Cup victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, though he never went on to make any appearances during his time there.
After being released in 2015, Urwin signed for AFC Fylde, where he made 13 appearances in Coasters colours, which earned him a move to Fleetwood Town the year after. Despite captaining the club’s development squad, he struggled to break into the first team.
Early 2017 saw Urwin loaned out to AFC Telford United, but was forced to return to Fleetwood less than a month later through a hip injury after making 3 appearances for the Bucks.
The goalkeeper was again loaned out by Fleetwood, this time to Chorley in August of the 2017/18 National League North season, where he was named as the Magpies’ Young Player Of The Year.
Urwin returned to Chorley on loan again for the 18/19 season. His move to the club was made permanent following the mutual termination of his contract at Fleetwood in January 2019.
Over the next 7 years Urwin cemented himself as a Chorley legend, going on to make over 350 appearances in black and white, as well as captaining the side in his final three seasons at the club. He left the club at the end of the 2025/26 season to take up the role of Senior Academy Goalkeeping Coach at Blackburn Rovers, where he started his career.
Matt briefly returned to Chorley in August of this year, taking over as goalkeeping coach while still being available for selection. The Goalkeeper now signs for Moors on a deal that runs until the end of the 2026/27 season.
Interim manager, Jason Ainsley, had this to say about our latest recruit…
“We’re delighted to bring Matty Urwin to Spennymoor Town on a contract until the end of the season.”
“I’ve kept in touch with Matty over the years, and with his job situation changing, he reached out to me about the possibility of joining us, which was something we were keen to explore.”
“Matty has been an unbelievable goalkeeper at this level for many years and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge. With Brad still coming back from injury, Matty gives us the experience, leadership and quality we need at this important stage of the season.”
“I’m delighted to have him here with us, and I’m really looking forward to seeing Matty in a Spennymoor shirt.”
