Unbeaten Chester make the trip to The Brewery Field as Moors continue to search for their first victory of the 2019/20 National League North season.
Monday’s 1-1 draw at Curzon Ashton left Spennymoor on two points after five games, with Callum Saunders cancelling out a deserved opener from Glen Taylor.
A lack of ruthlessness in and around the box has proven costly in the past few weeks, with spurned opportunities against Farsley, York and Curzon coming back to haunt Moors late in games, but, it’s evident that the points will follow once a clinical edge is discovered.
Much like York a week previous, Chester come into the clash in superb form and remain one of only two unbeaten sides in the division. Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley have overseen three successive wins over Gloucester, Kidderminster and Hereford. That spell has seen The Blues net nine times and concede just once.
A 2-0 win in January courtesy of goals from Ryan Hall and Taylor ensured Moors beat Chester in the first ever meeting between the sides at The Brewery Field.

Chester have enjoyed a very good start to the season. How would you evaluate the first few weeks of the campaign?
It’s been an excellent start. I think we all expected to be stronger this year, with improvements in terms of increased training etc, but to be seven unbeaten with four wins under our belts is brilliant.
In terms of the players brought in over the summer, who has made an impact in the early fixtures?
The group from last year have all been excellent so far – but the signings in the full back department in Kevin Roberts and Joel Taylor has been incredible. Joel has been quick and powerful and caught the eye on so many occasions already this term. We were outstanding on Monday, but he was singled out as Man of the Match which says a lot. Kevin Roberts at right back hasn’t put a foot wrong in the opening seven games. He’s added to a solid defensive unit – with new goalkeeper Russ Griffiths also looking good and picking up a few clean sheets.
Favourite moment of the season so far?
I think our last game, the Bank Holiday Monday 4-1 win at home to Hereford, was the best of the lot so far. In the sunshine, we had a big crowd in fine voice, and the lads absolutely dominated a strong team from start to finish. 4-1 I actually think flattered our opponents, it could have been seven or eight!
STATS CENTRE
- Chester are one of two sides yet to taste defeat in the league this season, the other being leaders York City.
- The Seals have conceded just five times in seven games. Only York have a better record (3).
- Spennymoor have collected one-point fewer from their first games this season then they did in 2018/19. Overall, Moors have won 5 points from a possible 30 available in those combined 10 matches.
- Moors are yet to concede against Chester having drew 0-0 and won 2-0 in 2018/19.
- Moors are currently on their longest winless run since March this year. They lost four and drew two during the month before beating Guiseley 3-2 on April 2nd.
VIEW FROM THE PRESS BOX
The Bank Holiday offered us the chance to get some points on the board with two games in quick succession against The Minstermen and Curzon Ashton. Playing two games in three days is always going to be physically demanding, as proven over the last two seasons, but it also represents a great chance to build up some momentum. In 2018/19 our campaign properly began over that period. We were winless in five before recording back-to-back 2-0 victories over Boston United and FC United of Manchester. Unfortunately, we couldn’t repeat the feat this time around, suffering a 1-4 defeat at the hands of York before a frustrating 1-1 draw at Curzon. The 1-4 score line at The Brewery Field made it look like a one-sided affair from the outside looking in, but taking the whole game into account, we had plenty of chances to take something.
Jason was very keen to take the positives from that afternoon and looked ahead to the test at The Tameside Stadium two days later. It was a ground where we had enjoyed a 5-0 win on the final day of the 2018/19 season. I remember that day for the freezing rain and abnormal temperatures despite it being April! In complete contrast, it was one of the hottest days on record for a Bank Holiday Monday earlier in the week, making it tough for the players in sweltering conditions. The game reminded me of one of those FIFA matches where you have loads of shots and chances, yet score once, and your opponent has one chance and finds the net. Glen netted his second goal of the campaign with twenty minutes remaining after Moors had been knocking on the door all afternoon, but Callum Saunders turned in Jack Banister’s cross from close range six minutes later. It was a real sickener.

NOTICES FOR SUPPORTERS
The South terracing is still under construction and will, therefore, be closed for the Chester game. Effectively this makes The Brewery Field a three-sided ground for the match. This will not affect the amenities such as catering or toilet provision.
The Tees Crescent turnstile will be closed for entry to the ground due to work, however it will be opened for use as an exit at full time.
The game will not be segregated.
CAR PARKING
Postcode for car park: DL16 6JW
The club has made strides to alleviate parking issues on a match day by striking a two-year deal with Durham County Council to utilise the old Durham Road school site for match day parking.
The car park will be manned by Spennymoor Town Youth FC volunteers and the price of use will be a donation to the Academy. All proceeds go to the Academy itself.
All spectators are advised to arrive at least half an hour before kick off to avoid potential congestion at the turnstiles which will be open from 1:30pm on a Saturday/Bank Holiday fixtures or from 6.45pm for a midweek fixture for both sets of supporters.
