As we wave goodbye to 2019 and the decade, the new year begins with a crunch clash against neighbours Darlington, one of the divisions in-form sides.
The Quakers have enjoyed a very jolly festive period, collecting maximum points after wins over York City, Moors and Blyth Spartans. Those three victories have catapulted Alun Armstrong’s side just one point behind Moors who have loosened their grip on a play-off spot after back-to-back defeats.
The 1-3 home defeat against Gateshead, marred by the controversial decision to disallow Glen Taylor’s second half header for offside, was Jason Ainsley’s first loss on home soil since August. What was once a comfortable berth in the top seven has now evaporated as the sides directly below Moors pick up form.
However, perspective must be applied, as before those consecutive defeats, Spennymoor were on a 13 game unbeaten run which is no easy task in a division as competitive as the National League North.
One of those two defeats came against Darlington on Boxing Day, a game which was won via a debatable penalty converted by Stephen Thompson, coincidentally his 100th strike for the club, and he and his teammates will be full of confidence as a key part of the season nears its frantic conclusion.
Whatever the outcome, it’s set to be an afternoon packed with atmosphere and passion which around 2000 fans expected to descend upon The Brewery Field.
