The Brewery Field played host to a Secondary School Football Tournament on Friday as 12 teams from right around the North East travelled to enjoy a day of sport in Spennymoor.

Schools from the likes of Middlesbrough, Stockton and Darlington formed part of the field in a fun competition organised by Moors in the Community and backed by Guardian Alliance, which gave a host of local children the chance to play on the pitch.

The teams were drawn into three groups with the winners, runners-up and best-ranked third placed teams all advancing through to the knockout stages and through to an eventual Final.

After a fun-filled day of football, the eventual winners were Beaumont Hill from Darlington who saw off Windlestone 2-1 in a hugely entertaining Final to land the Moors in the Community Trophy.

Meanwhile, the teams who didn’t qualify played in their own secondary tournament and Croft were the winners of that one, triumphing 1-0 in the Final to lift the Moors in the Community Shield.

“I am proud of how successful the tournament was because this is the first time we’ve done anything like this at the Football Club,” said Moors’ Community Development Manager, Luke Cowie.

“We were really keen to put the tournament on to provide an opportunity for children across County Durham and the wider area to participate in sport and become connected to Spennymoor Town.

“It ties in perfectly with our school engagement plan because we want to reach out and work with as many schools as we can across the North East.

“I would like to offer a big thanks to our volunteers, including Chris, Billy, Laura and Steve as well as the schools, the children and the teachers who came with them for making sure it was such a massive success.

“We’re already excited about the 2024 tournament!”
