Report: Moors 1 Chester 1

Will Harris climbed off the bench to rescue a point for Moors as the came from behind to draw with Chester at The Brewery Field on Saturday.

The front man’s ferocious finish three minutes from time earned a result for Jamie Chandler’s men after they had fallen behind to Charlie Caton’s close range strike 13 minutes earlier.

Chandler was without Mark Anderson and Michael Ledger through injury, so there were starts for Sam Fielding and Danny Greenfield, while Joshua Popoola came in for his debut after arriving on loan from Stockport County.

And the teenage loanee almost marked his first start in Moors colours with a goal on 11 minutes when a fluffed clearance fell to his feet, and he drilled a shot from 25 yards which flashed just wide.

Glen Taylor fired a venomous free-kick on goal from fully 35-yards which was well saved by Chester keeper Wyll Stanway, while the Moors front man also put an effort over the bar.

Rob Ramshaw had the first half’s best chance when he latched on to Callum Ross’ teasing cross into the box, but Chester threw bodies in the way to block the midfielder’s effort and the follow-up from Taylor.

Things got a bit scrappy after the break as Chester, who were without a point away from home so far this season, stuck to their task and continued to show real determination at the back.

However, Greenfield almost put Moors ahead when he scampered into the box on the end of a delightful move involving Ramshaw and Taylor only for Stanway to dart from his line and make a fine block.

On 74 minutes the unthinkable happened. Chester skipper George Glendon rode a few challenges to drive to the byline on the left and delivered a low ball across which was gratefully swept home by Caton to give the visitors something to hang on to.

Taylor fired over moments later as Moors looked to mount a response, while Owen Gallacher and Harris were both introduced from the bench to increase the firepower on the pitch.

And the two substitutes combined with three minutes remaining when Chester failed to deal with Gallacher’s ball into the box and Harris was perfectly placed to ram the loose ball home from just inside the area.

Gallacher could even have won it when he reacted brilliantly on the edge of the area to send a half-cleared cross back towards goal with his head, but it dropped wide of the post and the points were shared.
