Report: Moors 2 Washington 0

Two second half goals were enough to see Moors to victory over Washington and through to the Second Round of the Durham Challenge Cup.

Kingston Butler opened the scoring in the 74th minute, thumping home from inside the box, before Katia Kouyate tapped home at the back post with seven minutes left.

Both sides saw some early chances, first through Mitch Hancox, who blazed an effort over the bar from distance, before Reece Blakey put his effort wide of the post at the other end.

Butler got on the end of a lovely ball over the top with 21 minutes on the clock, but good defensive work from Washington prevented the winger from causing any damage.

Moors looked to have opened the scoring on the half hour mark, but Cam Salkeld’s prodded effort was ruled out for offside.

Hancox went close right at the end of the first half, as he dispatched an effort from inside of the area, but George Scaife was on hand to stop the strike from close range.

Moors started the second half with intensity as both Olly Green and Butler saw their efforts diverted wide of the mark by Washington men.

James Barron was tested for the first time on the 67th minute as Blakey took aim from close range, but the Moors goalkeeper did well to put the strike wide.

Salkeld had a good chance saved at stretch by Scaife at one end, before Brad Tyrie had to be shepherded away from goal after he rounded Barron less than a minute later.

The deadlock was broken with just 16 minutes left as Butler got into the penalty area before slamming a powerful shot into the back of the net to give Moors the lead.

Moors’ second came just nine minutes later when substitute Ethan Docherty got away down the right. He drove towards the area before flashing a low ball to the back post, where Kouyate thumped home to double the advantage.
