Ladies Thump Wallsend To Move Fifth

Autumn Colledge scored twice as Moors Ladies continued their excellent run of form with a 4-0 thrashing of Wallsend Boys Club Women at Whitworth Park Academy on Sunday.

Brent Smithson’s side climbed up to fifth place in the NERWFL Premier Division table on the back of the superb win as they made it seven points from the last available nine.

Moors set the tone early on as they pressed their visitors on to the back foot with some excellent football. Autumn Colledge came close to nodding them in front on 16 minutes, while she was also denied by an excellent save from the keeper moments later.

However, it was third time lucky for the skipper when she finally got her goal midway through the first half when she was fouled in the area before picking herself up to score from the resultant penalty.

It was a couple of minutes later as Moors underlined their superiority when they took advantage of some hesitation in the Wallsend defence and Kelly Garcia tucked away her first goal for the Club.

Kelly Richardson drew another fine save from the visiting keeper and Garcia was also thwarted by the in-form stopper as Moors felt unlucky not to have extended their lead before half time.

The dangerous Richardson saw another shot saved early in the second half and then almost made it 3-0 direct from a corner before Sophie White became the next player denied by Wallsend’s inspired goalkeeper.

However, she was helpless to stop Caitlin bates making it 3-0 to Moors just after the hour as the pressure on the visitors’ goal finally told.

Moors keeper Sophie Miller was then forced into some action at the other end when she pulled off a great save to deny Wallsend a route back into the game.

And Smithson’s side made absolutely certain of the three points on 72 minutes when superb work from Bates down the right set up Autumn Colledge to steer home her second of the afternoon for 4-0.

“It was a dominant performance and one the girls should be proud of,” said a delighted Smithson afterwards.

“We’ve created lots of chances and probably could have won the game by a bigger margin but it’s a terrific result and it underlines the confidence we’re playing with at the moment.

“It was hard not playing for so long over Christmas in to the New Year but the players have kept their focus, worked hard for each other and they’re starting to get their rewards.

“We’ve moved up a little in the table, but we have to keep going because we are all determined to finish the season as strongly as possible now.”
